Our role in supporting the environment

Climate change and diversity and inclusion

The news has been filled this week with COP26, the UN climate change conference being held in Glasgow in the coming days. News topics include which world leaders are attending or sending their delegates (in person or online,) with the implication that those attending online may be less committed and what climate goals (or not) countries are committing to.

The goals of the conference include global net zero emissions targets by mid-century, protecting communities and natural habitats, having countries commit budget towards activities and finalizing the rules from the Paris agreement to make it operational.

All good but not easy stuff or problems to solve. And with the COVID-19 pandemic (in my opinion) placing heightened attention on climate change and the environment, we need more of this work receiving attention in the news.

So what does working in diversity and inclusion have to do with climate change?

Developing sustainability energy sources, keeping global warming to a minimum and protecting the environment is going to require new solutions, innovation and lots of diverse people working together. That’s why COP26 is so important.

Are you seeing where this is going?

McKinsey’s research found that that diverse and inclusive companies are likely to make better and bolder decisions, and diverse teams have been shown to be more likely to radically innovate and anticipate shifts in markets.

This is what’s needed in solving not only organisational and business performance problems but also in driving sustainability and climate change goals.

People working in diversity and inclusion can play a key part in solving these problems by brining their experiences and capability. Things like helping remove bias from decisions, making sure diverse people and thinking is brought to challenges, and helping leaders build psychological safety so people will speak up and contribute.
